Fitted home offices in London Docklands, Tower Hamlets
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted home offices in London Docklands starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A desk buried under papers
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
Fitted home offices for your home in London Docklands
Fitted home offices in London Docklands: what you get
Everything in a home office starts with the desk. It’s made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with storage below where it helps. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. The design visit in London Docklands is where these choices are made. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a guest room that’s needed for work and working at the kitchen table.
Some newer homes have a landing or stair space wide enough for a small desk. Around London Docklands, many homes were built since 2000. A desk like that suits occasional work, with closed storage to keep it tidy. Any cables are routed neatly to the nearest sockets.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

The problems fitted home offices solve
Cables and chargers are a common frustration. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
- Cables trailing across the desk and floor
- No proper place to work from home
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
What to check before you book
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
London Docklands homes and fitted home offices
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around London Docklands were built since 2000 (about 70%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 63 entries within half a mile of the centre of London Docklands. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and home offices can be designed to work around them. Newer homes are more common around London Docklands than across Tower Hamlets: about 70% date from 2000 onwards, against about 45%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.
If your children go to Tower Hamlets College or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. If you live in a flat close to Canary Wharf station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Why bespoke in London Docklands?
Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why us?
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Fitting day, step by step
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
- It starts when you get in touch about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
- We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use, and plan where the cables will run.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
- Your office furniture is made at our workshop, sized for the room, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Questions we are often asked
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
My home in London Docklands is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?
In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. At the design visit we will measure and tell you what fits.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What affects the price in London Docklands
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The width and height of the space
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Where you live, with the postcode
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
