Window Seats in Merton Park

Planning window seats for a home in Merton Park? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A recess under the window doing nothing

Your questions about window seats in Merton Park

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Merton Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Merton station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How we make window seats for Merton Park

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Merton Park. If you’re living with a bay with no furniture that fits and a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Merton Park, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the window and the room.
  2. We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters. Then we go through the seat height and storage.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Merton Park homes and window seats

About 47% of the homes in the area around Merton Park went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Merton Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Dorset Hall (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Merton Park is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square. If you live in a flat close to South Merton station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Merton Park is about 1 mile north-west of Wimbledon, in the London Borough of Merton. We design and make window seats for homes in Merton Park, as part of our work in every London borough. Across Merton, we cover Merton Park, along with the rest of the borough.

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Is bespoke worth it?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Do you need window seats in Merton Park?

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. Mention any decorating plans at the measuring visit so the timing works. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books

For a family home near Merton Park Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How parking will work on your street
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
