Window seats in Hounslow West
How we make window seats for Hounslow West
A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. In Hounslow West, the design visit is where the details are settled. If your home has a bay window that’s hard to furnish and no comfortable place to sit in the light, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. Around Hounslow West, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Fitted storage in Hounslow West
About 33% of the homes in the area around Hounslow West went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Hounslow West is partly covered by the Hounslow Cavalry Barracks Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Hounslow sets its own rules. If your street in Hounslow West is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
If you live near Hounslow Heath, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a family home near Hounslow Heath Infant and Nursery School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 2.1 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Why bespoke in Hounslow West?
Standard storage benches come in set sizes. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Why us?

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- First you let us know about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
- We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Honest limits
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Fabric covers and cushions
- Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window

- Hand-painted finish
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
- Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
- Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
When we have finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.
Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. That protects the hinges and the paint. Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you make window seats for homes in Hounslow West?
Yes, we work across Hounslow, Hounslow West included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can a window seat go over the radiator?
Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. A grille in the front lets the heat into the room. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
