Window seats for your home in Heston
About our window seats in Heston
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. We will look at your radiator during the design visit in Heston. If you are living with no comfortable place to sit in the light and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator, that is what window seats are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Heston, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

- Fixing the window itself
- Plastering and decorating around the seat
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What else we make in Heston
Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
- Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
- Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge picks up marks first.
Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
How fitting day works
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
- At the design visit, every side of the window is measured. Then we talk through the seat height and storage.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
Before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
How to get a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
FAQs: window seats in Heston
Can you make window seats for a home in Heston?
Yes, Heston is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hounslow and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
I live near Southall station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
How much does a window seat cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.
Can a window seat go over the radiator?
Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Storage above a radiator stays warm, so it suits things that don’t mind that.
Is it time for window seats?
For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It also keeps the floor clear.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- No space for toys and games
- Toys spread across a bedroom floor
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- Wanting a quiet place to read
For a family home near Westbrook Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
Choosing a carpenter
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
Making use of awkward spaces in Heston
About 44% of the homes in the area around Heston went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 33% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Heston Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Heston. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 44% of homes in the area around Heston date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bay windows are a feature of many interwar houses, and they suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath.
If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square. The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.2 miles east. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
Heston is about 2 miles south-east of Hounslow, within the London Borough of Hounslow. From period terraces to newer flats in Heston, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our Hounslow coverage includes Heston and the places around it.
Design visits and fitting in TW5, UB2 and TW3 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street like Fern Lane, Sutton Road and Eton Avenue or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for window seats. Heston is near the A3005; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for window seats include North Hyde (1 mile north), Norwood Green (1 mile north-east), Lampton (1 mile south-east), Hounslow West (1 mile south) and Osterley (1 mile east). We also make window seats in nearby places such as Hounslow (2 miles south-east), Feltham (3 miles south-west), Brentford (3 miles east), Isleworth (2 miles south-east), Chiswick (5 miles east) and Strand-on-the-Green (4 miles east).
Landmarks near Heston
Around Heston, we cover homes near The Plough Public House and Heston Community School, among other places. Heston’s nearest station is Southall station, roughly 1.4 miles north of the centre. A little further out are Hounslow Hospital (1.2 miles south) and Treaty Centre (1.3 miles south-east). Not far away are Garden Lake.
Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
