Window seats for homes in South Croydon

In the streets around South Croydon, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of South Croydon. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in South Croydon is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Sanderstead station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Duppas Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

South Croydon is about 3 miles north of Thornton Heath, part of the London Borough of Croydon. From period terraces to newer flats in South Croydon, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We list South Croydon among 32 places we cover in Croydon.

Every home in CR2, CR8 and CR0 is covered for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Edgar Road, Bynes Road and Grange Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for window seats. We also cover the places around South Croydon: Croydon (1 mile north), Coombe (1 mile north-east), Sanderstead (1 mile south-east), Riddlesdown (2 miles south) and Kenley (2 miles south). Window seats in South Croydon: what you get

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the whole wall looks considered. We can talk through the options when we visit in South Croydon. People typically come to us about a bay with no furniture that fits and a nursery or bedroom short of storage; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around South Croydon, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

FAQs: window seats in South Croydon

Can you make window seats for a home in South Croydon?

Yes, we work across Croydon, South Croydon included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Croydon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. Space is left around the radiator too. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

What window seats cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Radiator grilles
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for the frame, the seat and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished seat is MDF.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Empty the space we will be working in

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

What affects the price in South Croydon

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The internal fittings
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
