For a flat, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Queen's House, about 1.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. If you live in a period home close to St Katharine with St Bartholomew, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

About our window seats in Surrey Quays

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Surrey Quays. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay and a bay window that’s hard to furnish.

A large number of homes around Surrey Quays date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. It can match the woodwork around the window.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there’s a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It’s painted to match the other fronts. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Make room so the whole bay can be measured
  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window

Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is typically all it needs. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge picks up marks first.

Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Dry any water on the paint promptly.

What affects the cost of window seats

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you contact us

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you’re after

  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber

Common questions about window seats

I live in a flat in Surrey Quays. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make window seats for a home in Surrey Quays?

Yes, Surrey Quays is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Southwark and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
