Lambeth Fitted Cupboards
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Lambeth, each designed at a visit to your home.

How we make fitted cupboards for Lambeth
We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in a colour agreed with you. Most enquiries start with hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around Lambeth, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
How it is made
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface. The colour is agreed with you.
Fitted cupboards for homes in Lambeth
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Lambeth, with about 21% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Lambeth. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. About 36% of homes in the neighbourhood around Lambeth were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are usually plasterboard on studs, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.
For a flat near Vauxhall station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Old Paradise Gardens, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Lambeth is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 2 miles south of Stockwell. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Lambeth included. We cover places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Design visits and fitting in SE11, SW1P and SW8 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street like Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for fitted cupboards. Lambeth sits close to the A3203 and A3204, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Other places close to Lambeth include Vauxhall (1 mile north), Kennington (1 mile south), Oval (1 mile south), Newington Butts (1 mile east) and St George's Fields (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Stockwell (2 miles south), Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), Clapham (2 miles south-west), Brixton (2 miles south) and Loughborough Junction (2 miles south-east).

Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- A utility room with proper storage
- A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will the quote be in writing?

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Lambeth
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Lambeth?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?
Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them isn’t our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
How fitting works for fitted cupboards
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.
- You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
- We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
- You receive a quote in writing for the cupboards.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
Preparing the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
