About our loft storage in Oval

Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers lower down. It uses the full height of the room. We’ll plan it during the design visit in Oval. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are an empty dormer that could hold shelves and boxes piled on loft boards.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Oval, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage typically goes. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. We’ll give you an honest view at the measuring visit. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, which wastes the space above. Built-in pieces use the full height.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What you get with us

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Questions we are often asked

Do you make loft storage for homes in Oval?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Oval is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Oval?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

Not when it is planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do you need loft storage in Oval?

Boxes, suitcases and seasonal things need a home. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. The room stays calm and clear.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom

If your children go to St Stephen's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What affects the cost of loft storage

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What we need to know

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Loft storage in Oval: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Oval, with about 26% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Oval is partly covered by the Vauxhall Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 69% of households in the neighbourhood around Oval, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Buckingham Palace, about 1.7 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
