Wall beds in Oval

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We will talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. If you are living with a study that doubles as a spare room and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Oval, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before wall beds are fixed to the walls.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 32% of homes in the area around Oval were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.

For an older house near Calvary Church of God in Christ, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your children go to St Stephen's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

FAQs: wall beds in Oval

Is parking a problem for fitting in Oval?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Vauxhall station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

What does a wall bed cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the room. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the measuring visit too.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

What prompts wall beds in Oval

In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

For a flat near Vauxhall station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
