Bespoke kitchens for homes in Spitalfields
We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. People typically come to us about a larder for food and small appliances and extra cupboard space, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Many homes around Spitalfields were built since 2000, and a newer home’s original kitchen may not suit how you cook and live. A bespoke kitchen can replace the original with cabinets made for your room, with the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Gas, plumbing and electrics are for the right trades.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Tips worth knowing
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Make a note of what you use every day
- Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
- Measure the route into the kitchen
Don’t leave water sitting on painted cabinets, particularly near the sink. Even moisture-resistant materials last better when kept dry.
Line up your other trades in good time. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.
From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
- You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
- At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
- Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
- Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.
How to prepare
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Bespoke kitchens in Spitalfields: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 45% of the housing in the area around Spitalfields, with about 19% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 339 entries within half a mile of the centre of Spitalfields. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Tower Hamlets included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Spitalfields, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For families living near Makers Academy, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.
Spitalfields is within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 1 mile east of Whitechapel. Anywhere in Spitalfields, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Spitalfields is one of 31 places on our list for Tower Hamlets.
In E1, EC2A and E1W, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as New Road, Mark Lane and Bell Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Spitalfields is near the A10 and A1202, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. We also cover Whitechapel (1 mile east), Aldgate (1 mile south-west), Bishopsgate (1 mile west), Tower Hill (1 mile south) and Shoreditch (1 mile north). Other parts of Tower Hamlets we cover include Cambridge Heath (2 miles north-east), Mile End (2 miles east), Bow Common (2 miles east), Bromley (3 miles east), Limehouse (2 miles east) and Old Ford (3 miles north-east). As one of the bigger places in Tower Hamlets, Spitalfields is covered for bespoke kitchens and everything else we make.

Questions from Spitalfields
Does a conservation area in or near Spitalfields affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Spitalfields?
Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Spitalfields included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Which worktops and appliances can I have?
We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and the quote confirms what’s included.
How are bespoke kitchens priced?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, use our contact form.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Is it time for bespoke kitchens?
Others want the kitchen to suit the age of the house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and suit the house’s character.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Making the most of a galley kitchen
- Room for everything in the kitchen
- A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
- A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
Near listed buildings like Church of St Botolph, under half a mile south of the centre of Spitalfields, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Choosing a carpenter
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?

What else we make in Spitalfields
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made ranges rarely include a larder or dresser that fits a particular alcove. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.
