How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and discuss the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The kitchen is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

About our bespoke kitchens in Crofton

An island can be a good addition where there’s space for one. We check there is comfortable space on every side, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. People normally come to us about a kitchen that fits an uneven room and a painted kitchen in a colour you choose, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Crofton, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. A bespoke kitchen can be planned around the room as it is now, with an island where space allows.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Orpington station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Crofton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Kitchens in Crofton homes

In the neighbourhood around Crofton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 57%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Crofton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Crofton (about 57%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Kitchens from that era tend to be small and regular, which suits cabinets made to their exact size.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Crofton Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Jubilee Country Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They help before and after fitting:

  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in

Do not leave water sitting on painted cabinets, especially around the sink and dishwasher. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. We size the spaces around them, so late changes can be awkward.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

When you need someone else

Not everything around bespoke kitchens is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
