How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke kitchens in West End: what you get

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet giving a level line for the worktop you choose. Most enquiries start with a kitchen finished in your colours and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Narrow hallways in Victorian and Edwardian terraces set limits on how long a cabinet or panel can be. A large share of the homes around West End date from before 1919, so we measure the route to the kitchen as well as the room. Long runs are made in sections and joined on site, with the joins placed where they will not show.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in West End

Older kitchens often lack storage. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store than a row of standard wall units.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • A central island in a larger kitchen

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Giles in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Damp behind units can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Wiring for appliances and lights

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

The price for your room depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West End?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts.

How much time does fitting need?

Every kitchen is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in West End

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West End, with about 21% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central West End. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.

For a flat near Tottenham Court Road station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Soho Parish CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.
