Fitted wardrobes for homes in Gospel Oak
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it, which helps keep mould away. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. If you are living with too little room for clothes and clothes with nowhere proper to go, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Gospel Oak, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Gospel Oak
Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Gospel Oak?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do you cover homes near Gospel Oak station?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Building work to create a loft room
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
Materials and parts
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Spray-painted finish
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Tips worth knowing
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again.
Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
How we price fitted wardrobes
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Getting in touch
These details help when you get in touch:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Fitted wardrobes in Gospel Oak: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Gospel Oak were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Gospel Oak is within about a quarter of a mile of the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Gospel Oak (about 48%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use.
If you live in a flat close to Gospel Oak station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Parliament Hill? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a period home close to Highgate Road Chapel, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
