Cambridge Heath Bespoke Kitchens

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Cambridge Heath, each designed at a visit to your home.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Cambridge Heath

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. If you’re living with a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and making the most of a galley kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

The boiler in many post-war homes sits in the kitchen, on a wall or in a cupboard. Many homes around Cambridge Heath were built between 1945 and the early 1970s, so planning around a boiler is a likely part of the design. A boiler housing keeps the clearances and ventilation set out in the manufacturer’s instructions, and boiler work is for a Gas Safe engineer.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in Cambridge Heath is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cambridge Heath?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. We scribe each cabinet to the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth, to give a level line for the worktop. It is one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Let us know about parking during the design visit
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early

The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.

Think about how the cabinets will get in. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about any narrow spots.

Kitchens in Cambridge Heath: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Cambridge Heath were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Cambridge Heath is in the Regent's Canal Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your children go to Mowlem Primary School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. For a flat near Cambridge Heath station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1 mile north. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Cambridge Heath is about 1 mile south-west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We cover Cambridge Heath as part of our work across Tower Hamlets. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Design visits and fitting in E2, E8 and E9 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Gore Road, Ion Square and Globe Road, and we cover homes on all of them for bespoke kitchens. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in London Fields (1 mile north-west), Bethnal Green (1 mile south-west), Hackney Central (1 mile north), Hackney (1 mile north-east) and Haggerston (1 mile west). Elsewhere in Tower Hamlets, we also cover Spitalfields (2 miles south-west), Tower Hill (2 miles south-west), Bow Common (2 miles south-east), Bromley (2 miles south-east), Shadwell (2 miles south) and Limehouse (2 miles south-east). Cambridge Heath is one of the larger places we cover in Tower Hamlets.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it is useful to tell us at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Before we arrive

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Larder and dresser units

A larder gives tall storage for food and small appliances, sized to what you store.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
