How we make bespoke kitchens for West Silvertown

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are more storage in a small kitchen and an island where space allows.

In newer homes, the washing machine is often in the kitchen, with no utility room, so laundry and cleaning things need a place in the kitchen. Many homes around West Silvertown date from 2000 onwards. Your plumber connects any appliance, and the cabinets are made around the appliances you choose.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services.

Starting with a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Measure the route into the kitchen

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly near the sink. Even moisture-resistant materials last better when kept dry.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

People also want a kitchen that is built to last and can be repainted, which appeals if you’re staying put. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A kitchen for a room that is not square
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • Tall larder storage

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Warehouse W, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in West Silvertown?

Yes, we work across Newham, West Silvertown included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in West Silvertown?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours you choose.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

If there’s enough room, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we measure for it at the measuring visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

What you pay depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
