What prompts bespoke kitchens in East Sheen

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A layout for a small or awkward room

Living in a block of flats near Mortlake station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

About our bespoke kitchens in East Sheen

Our bespoke kitchens are fitted in East Sheen and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure and go through the layout, then a written quote. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your home has a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets, that’s what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around East Sheen were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the kitchen is often in the narrow rear part of the house. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Mortlake station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

If the room is big enough, yes. We measure during the design visit to check there is room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Larder and dresser units

Dressers suit many period kitchens, and each is made for its wall.

Birch plywood

Deep pan drawers need a strong box, and birch plywood suits them.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and normally cost less, and in a square modern room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they can be hard to fit neatly. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What you get with us

Bespoke kitchens in East Sheen: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around East Sheen were built before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of East Sheen, 18 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. All of London, Richmond upon Thames included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to East Sheen fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

For an older house near All Saints' Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
