Bespoke kitchens in Aldersbrook
Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. Typical reasons to get in touch are more storage in a small kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Sash windows and back doors to the garden are common in older kitchens. With a large share of the homes around Aldersbrook built before 1919, the cabinets are planned around the windows and doors you have. The sink position is agreed with your plumber. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Aldersbrook?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Aldersbrook?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What are the kitchen cabinets made of?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?
Yes. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled, to give a level line for the worktop. That’s a big part of why bespoke suits period homes.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, so the finish can be repainted later. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Why choose us

From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
- We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
- We send a written quote.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
- We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Preparing the room
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Aldersbrook
Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, leaving gaps at the ends and above. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room from the start.
We are often asked to help with:
- A kitchen island with room around it
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
- Making the most of a galley kitchen
The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Honest limits
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Building work, such as removing walls
- Moving water or waste pipes
- Any work on the gas supply
