Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How big the furniture is
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Old Ford
We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. Most enquiries start with making the most of a galley kitchen and a kitchen finished in your colours, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A large number of homes around Old Ford date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age have compact kitchens. Made-to-measure cabinets use the gaps a standard kitchen leaves. Boxed-in pipes and risers are built around.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Before and after fitting day
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Think about how you cook and what you store
- Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
- Measure the route into the kitchen
Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We cannot advise on your lease.
Made-to-measure kitchens in Old Ford
Homes built since 2000 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around Old Ford, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Fish Island Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Old Ford. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Old Ford, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Mulberry UTC or a school nearby, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. If you live in a period home close to St Paul Old Ford, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.5 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
Old Ford is about 2 miles south-west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. From period terraces to newer flats in Old Ford, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across Tower Hamlets.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Old Ford
Is Old Ford in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. Old Ford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
I live in a flat in Old Ford. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours you choose.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Will you connect the sink and appliances?
No, those are jobs for other trades. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician, while we make and fit the cabinets.
Can I have a kitchen island?
Yes, where there’s space. At the design visit we check the clearances around it. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

- At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
- Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Plastering, tiling or decorating
- Connecting a gas hob or cooker
- Plumbing, which is for your plumber
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it is made from
- Islands where space allows
- Larders and dressers
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
With a spray finish, the painting is done in the workshop, so there is less to do on site.
Birch plywood
Long kitchen shelves can sag under plates and jars, and birch plywood helps.
