Bespoke kitchens in Canary Wharf, Tower Hamlets

Planning bespoke kitchens for a home in Canary Wharf? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room

Kitchens in Canary Wharf homes

About 66% of the homes in the area around Canary Wharf went up since 2000, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 54 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Canary Wharf. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 89% of households in the neighbourhood around Canary Wharf, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Canary Wharf, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Canary Wharf station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Canary Wharf is about 2 miles west of Whitechapel, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We design and make bespoke kitchens for homes in Canary Wharf and across Tower Hamlets. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets.

In E14, SE16 and E22, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Castor Lane, Cassilis Road and Dockyard Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Canary Wharf sits close to the A1261. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in London Docklands (1 mile east), Poplar (1 mile north-east), Heron Quays (1 mile south-west), Coldharbour (1 mile east) and Blackwall (1 mile east). Across the rest of Tower Hamlets, our area takes in Whitechapel (2 miles west), Spitalfields (3 miles west), Tower Hill (3 miles west), Bethnal Green (2 miles north-west), Cambridge Heath (3 miles north-west) and Stepney (2 miles north-west).

How we make bespoke kitchens for Canary Wharf

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet giving a level line for the worktop you choose. Most enquiries start with room for everything in the kitchen and spaces sized for your oven and fridge, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Kitchens in newer homes often face onto a balcony door or a large window, which leaves fewer walls for cabinets. With many homes around Canary Wharf built since 2000, tall units and an island or peninsula can make up the difference. Fixings are chosen for plasterboard where that is what the walls are.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

An extension or a knocked-through room is a common starting point. A new layout deserves a kitchen designed for it, and building work itself is for your builder.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • An island where space allows
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

How we price bespoke kitchens

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in a period house.

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, sized to what you store.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Canary Wharf

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Canary Wharf?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Canary Wharf?

Yes. Canary Wharf is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

How much time does fitting need?

How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Every kitchen is different, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can I have a kitchen island?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we check this at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made kitchens are widely available and often cheaper, and in a square modern room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they can be hard to fit neatly. Bespoke is a bigger investment, built around the space you have. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
