How we make bespoke kitchens for Limehouse
We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If your home has a kitchen planned around your appliances and a larder for food and small appliances, that’s what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Many homes around Limehouse have been built since 2000, and in newer homes the kitchen is typically part of an open-plan room. A bespoke kitchen can be planned to sit well in that space, with an island where there’s room. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so wall cabinets are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
How fitting day works
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
- At the design visit we measure the room and discuss the layout, storage and finish.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Limehouse homes and bespoke kitchens
Homes built since 2000 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Limehouse, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 85 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Limehouse. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Limehouse, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
If you live near Bartlett Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Anne, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Bow Common, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Before and after fitting day
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Allow space to walk round an island
- Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
- Think about how you cook and what you store
- Talk to your other trades in good time
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We cannot advise on your lease.
Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Limehouse
Does a conservation area in or near Limehouse affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Limehouse?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
What happens during the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
How long does fitting take?
It depends on the kitchen. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. What you get is a kitchen planned around how you cook and live. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
