Bespoke kitchens in Poplar

Why bespoke in Poplar?

Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and usually cost less, and in a square modern room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they can be hard to fit neatly. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It still uses the full height.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

What you get with us

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Poplar

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the worktop you choose can sit level. If you’re living with a painted kitchen in a colour you choose and more storage in a small kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large number of homes around Poplar date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes normally have open-plan kitchens. A bespoke kitchen can be planned to sit well in that space, with an island where there’s room. Stud walls need wall cabinets fixed into the studs or with suitable fixings.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Poplar

Is parking a problem for fitting in Poplar?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Poplar?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours you choose.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

People typically get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • Open shelves with cupboards below

For an older house near St Peter's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

Kitchens in Poplar: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Poplar were built since 2000 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The St Matthias' Church Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Poplar. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Newer homes are more common around Poplar than across Tower Hamlets: about 66% date from 2000 onwards, against about 45%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

If you live near Bartlett Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. For families living near Tower Hamlets College, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
