About our bespoke kitchens in Swiss Cottage
We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a painted dresser for the kitchen and room for everything in the kitchen.
In a period terrace, the front door, hall and any turn into the kitchen limit the size of each piece. A large share of the homes around Swiss Cottage date from before 1919, so the route to the kitchen is measured at the measuring visit. Long runs arrive in sections and are joined in place, with the joins placed where they will not show.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Swiss Cottage
Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Swiss Cottage, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 125 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Swiss Cottage. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Swiss Cottage is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live in a period home close to Church of All Souls, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Near listed buildings like Belsize Fire Station, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Swiss Cottage, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What we don’t do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Knocking through or rebuilding walls
- Connecting a gas hob or cooker
- Plastering, tiling or decorating
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from

- Larders and dressers
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Islands where space allows
- Moisture-resistant MDF
How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- First, you let us know about the kitchen you have and the one you want. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- At the design visit we measure the room and go through the layout, storage and finish.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
- The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer do the plumbing, electrics and gas. We do not arrange those trades, so it’s useful to book them early.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Related advice
Is it time for bespoke kitchens?
In a flat, the kitchen may share a wall with the living space or sit in a narrow galley. We can design for a galley, an alcove or a corner, so every run is used.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A central island in a larger kitchen
- Room for everything in the kitchen
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
- A larder for food and small appliances
For a family home near The UCL Academy, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
- Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
- Choose your appliances before the design is final
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
Measure the route into the kitchen as well as the room. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so tell us about tight turns or small lifts.
Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Swiss Cottage
Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Swiss Cottage?
Yes. Swiss Cottage is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Swiss Cottage?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can I have a kitchen island?
If there’s enough room, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the design visit. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts.
Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?
Yes. We scribe each cabinet to the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. It’s one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.
Do you supply the worktop and appliances?
The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.
Will you connect the sink and appliances?
No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.
