Loft storage in Swiss Cottage, Camden

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in Swiss Cottage, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near South Hampstead station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Swiss Cottage is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Loft storage for homes in Swiss Cottage

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Swiss Cottage, we’ll see what fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room and unused space in a dormer, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around Swiss Cottage were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That is where fitted storage comes in.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What prompts loft storage in Swiss Cottage

Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It is often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home

For a flat near South Hampstead station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the cost of loft storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a written quote follows.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Check the route up to the loft

Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. You will know it all works as it should.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Fitted storage in Swiss Cottage

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Swiss Cottage were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 125 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Swiss Cottage. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 31% of households in the streets around Swiss Cottage live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

For an older house near Church of All Souls, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. If your children go to The UCL Academy or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
