Built-in bookshelves in Brentham Garden Suburb: what you get
Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it. It makes use of wall space that’s typically left bare. If your home has bowing shelves in an old bookcase and low shelves children can reach, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A good part of the housing around Brentham Garden Suburb is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Allow room for the collection to grow
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Let us know about access early
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across.
Do not block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Heat needs to move into the room.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Do you need built-in bookshelves in Brentham Garden Suburb?
New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Shelving that frames a window
- Books piled on the floor
- Room for a record collection
- Bookcases that lean or wobble
If your children go to St Gregory's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Where they’ll park and unload
- A written quote that sets out the job
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Built-in living-room furniture in Brentham Garden Suburb
About 40% of the homes in the area around Brentham Garden Suburb went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Brentham Garden Suburb include Church of St Peter (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Church of St Barnabas (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Ealing included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Brentham Garden Suburb. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
For an older house near Church of St Barnabas, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
