Built-in bookshelves in South Ealing, Ealing
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in South Ealing starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Space for art books and records
- Books with nowhere left to go

Built-in bookshelves in South Ealing
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it’s worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves packed two rows deep and a home library or study; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around South Ealing date from then. Full-height built-in bookshelves can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Living-room carpentry in South Ealing: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around South Ealing were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Ealing Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of South Ealing. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 33% of households in the area around South Ealing live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, which suit built-in bookshelves built to their exact widths.
If your children go to Grange Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, under half a mile north of the centre of South Ealing, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
- Allow room for the collection to grow
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
Keep a record of the colour. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.
Flats, leases and landlords
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Does a conservation area in or near South Ealing affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Brentford station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
