What TV and media units cannot fix

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

TV and media units for homes in Brixton

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Brixton once the design and quote are agreed. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are leads that show from every angle and games, controllers and remotes everywhere.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room normally keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around Brixton, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. TV and media units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in Brixton

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Brixton?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Brixton?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do I get a quote?

Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are, and your electrician can move them if needed.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

TV and media units for homes in Brixton

Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Brixton, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Brixton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 50% of households in the streets around Brixton, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near Sudbourne Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Max Roach Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Standard units come in fixed sizes. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Note the size of each box and speaker
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so clean them now and then. It keeps air moving.

Do not let clutter build up against the unit’s vents as things change.
