Loft storage for your home in Brixton

Loft storage in Brixton: what you get

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in Brixton, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If your home has boxes and suitcases with no home and a converted loft with no fitted furniture, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Brixton built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Do you need loft storage in Brixton?

Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Cupboards behind the knee wall hide them away. It keeps the room tidy.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room

Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. It starts when you contact us with a few details about the loft, and how you get up to it.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and discuss the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. The storage is fitted in the loft and checked, door by door.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Making use of tricky spaces in Brixton

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Brixton were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Brixton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 27% of households in the streets around Brixton live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Chapel of Corpus Christi, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Brixton, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near Trinity Congregational Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Where other trades come in

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Any work on the structure of the house
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Birch plywood

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges around handles are touched most.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

How we price loft storage

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Parking near your home
  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The width and height of the space

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Examples of the look you’re after

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Your questions about loft storage in Brixton

Is Brixton in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. Brixton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Brixton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. At the design visit, we measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landings. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not if it’s planned with care. We design eaves storage so it doesn’t block ventilation or squash insulation. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft.
