Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. Typical reasons to get in touch are space for art books and records and a home library or study, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and around Heron Quays many homes date from those years. Built-in bookshelves can give the sitting end of an open-plan room its own identity. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions from Heron Quays
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Heron Quays?
Yes. Heron Quays is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Heron Quays?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
How much will my built-in bookcase cost?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. The colour is agreed with you, and refreshing it later is simple.
Shelves
Depth is set around what you keep: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.
What prompts built-in bookshelves in Heron Quays
Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different and can take a desk or reading seat too.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Books with nowhere left to go
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Bookcases that lean or wobble
- Shelves deep enough for large books
Close to Sir John McDougall Gardens? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
What to check before you book
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
Where other trades come in
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitting day, step by step
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

Advice
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Heron Quays
Homes built since 2000 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around Heron Quays, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Heron Quays include Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-east, and Fitch and Sons Works (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Heron Quays fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Seven Mills Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
