About our window seats in Cricklewood

Cushions are not something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no comfortable place to sit in the light and unused space below a sash window.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Cricklewood built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Why people ask for window seats in Cricklewood

A quiet place to read is a common wish. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • Needing more storage in the room
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste

If you live in a flat close to Cricklewood station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • A written quote that sets out the job

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure

Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. A little ventilation helps keep things dry. If anything is not right with the seat, use our contact form and we will talk it through.

Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. Keep the window ventilated in cold weather. Dry any water on the paint promptly.

Fitted storage in Cricklewood

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Cricklewood were built before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Cricklewood, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Gabriel (Grade II), under half a mile south, and The Crown Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Cricklewood is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Fenton House, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. For an older house near St Gabriel's Church, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

For a quote for window seats in Cricklewood, get in touch through our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Cricklewood is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Does a conservation area in or near Cricklewood affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Storage above a radiator stays warm, so it suits things that do not mind that.

What is a window seat made from?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
