Built-in Bookshelves in Well Hall
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Well Hall starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- Books piled on the floor
Built-in bookshelves for your home in Well Hall
Could you do it yourself?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Well Hall
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether or have a plumber move it first. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted wall space around a door or window and a home library or study.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Well Hall, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought bookcases typically come in one depth, which may be too deep for paperbacks or too shallow for art books. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
- At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
- Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The bookcase is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Arranging a design visit
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

What else we make in Well Hall
How we price built-in bookshelves
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The internal fittings
- How square the room is
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
When you contact us, these help most:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Examples of the look you are after
- What you’d like to store or use the space for

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Well Hall
Does a conservation area in or near Well Hall affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
I live near Eltham station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the paint.
Don’t load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so during the design visit.
