Living-room carpentry in West End: local notes
In the area around West End, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 934 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of West End. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in West End, let us know at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
For a flat near Tottenham Court Road station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
West End is about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras, in the London Borough of Camden. We cover West End as part of our work across Camden, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Camden, large and small.
In W1F, W1D and W1T, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street such as Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bridle Lane or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for TV and media units. Main roads around West End include the A301 and A400. If you’re just outside West End, we also cover Seven Dials (1 mile east), St Giles (1 mile north-east), Soho (1 mile west), Chinatown (1 mile south-west) and Covent Garden (1 mile east). Elsewhere in Camden, we also cover Hampstead (4 miles north-west), West Hampstead (4 miles north-west), Agar Town (2 miles north), Kentish Town (2 miles north), Greenhill (4 miles north-west) and Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west). Being one of the larger places in Camden, West End is covered for TV and media units and everything else we make.
What’s near West End
The streets we cover here include those near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, LITE Regal International School and LSE Shaw Library. West End has its own railway station: Tottenham Court Road station. Other landmarks nearby include Leverian collection (less than half a mile south) and Kingly Court (within half a mile west). Not far away are Ludgate Hill and St. James's Park Lake.
How we make TV and media units for West End
We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Camden and the rest of London once the design and quote are agreed. People usually come to us about leads that show from every angle and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around West End date from then. Full-height TV and media units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What prompts TV and media units in West End
Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Standard TV stands rarely suit an tricky wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.
People normally get in touch with us about things like these:
- Leads that show from every angle
- A screen at the wrong height
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
- Clutter around the TV
If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
What to check before you book
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether they measure the room themselves
From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- We send a written quote for the unit.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
How to prepare
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Advice
Questions from West End
My house in West End is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
That’s a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting and we design the cable routes around the sockets.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.
Do you work for landlords and letting agents?
Yes. The process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, then the furniture is made and fitted. If the property is let, the agent can arrange access with the tenants.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Pricing TV and media units in West End
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking near your home
- How big the furniture is
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- The type of home and how the room is reached
To get a quote for TV and media units in West End, message us from the contact page. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
Why bespoke in West End?
Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later.
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and top. It’s what gives the unit its built-in look.
