Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

How we make fitted wardrobes for West Hampstead

Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and mismatched bedroom furniture.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around West Hampstead, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Finchley Road & Frognal station?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Hampstead?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Near listed buildings like Church of St John, under half a mile east of the centre of West Hampstead, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light before the final coat. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Doors and drawer fronts

Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
