Wall beds for homes in West Hampstead
Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. Most enquiries start with a study that doubles as a spare room and a bed that looks like cupboards by day, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around West Hampstead, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

FAQs: wall beds in West Hampstead
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is West Hampstead in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes, West Hampstead is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Do you supply the mattress?
What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We’ll explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.
Shelves
We size each shelf for its span and load.
Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
- Allow space for pillows and duvets
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Measure the clear space in front of the wall
The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.
Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.
Is it time for wall beds?
The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and folding it away gives the room a second life.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
- A flexible room for a growing family
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
If you live in a period home close to Presbyterian Church Of St Andrew, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.
- We start with what the room is for, day and night. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
- You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
- The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Let us know about parking near your home

We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Near listed buildings like Church of St John, less than half a mile east of the centre of West Hampstead, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around.
