Walk-in wardrobes in West Twyford: what you get

You don’t need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. Most enquiries start with a dressing table with drawers and a mirror and proper shoe storage, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around West Twyford, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in West Twyford

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around West Twyford went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Twyford, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 46% of households in the area around West Twyford, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to St. Raphael's Edible Garden? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. For families living near West Twyford Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You tell us about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Does a conservation area in or near West Twyford affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is West Twyford in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. West Twyford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls, while leaving space to stand and turn. We check the room at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before you decide. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.
