Window seats designed for your room
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Window seats in Westminster: what you get
In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that are not quite straight. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. If your home has toys spread across a bedroom floor and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay, window seats made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Westminster, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Boards, parts and paint
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panelled fronts can echo the woodwork in a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.
Pull-out drawers
A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Around a radiator, the drawers are placed to leave room for the heat. We agree the layout at the design visit.

FAQs: window seats in Westminster
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Westminster?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you make window seats for homes in Westminster?
Yes, Westminster is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?
It depends on what you will store and how often you will reach for it. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you don’t have to move the cushion.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Is bespoke worth it?
We scribe each seat to follow the walls and floor, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Window seats for homes in Westminster
Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the streets around Westminster, with about 25% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 412 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Westminster. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and window seats can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, the rest of London included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Westminster, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
For a flat near London Victoria station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square.
Westminster is about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster, in the City of Westminster. We cover Westminster as part of our work across the rest of London, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.
We cover every part of SW1P, W1J and SW1V for window seats. You will find streets here such as Eaton Lane, Wilton Road and Castle Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for window seats. The A4 and A202 run close to Westminster; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. Other places close to Westminster include Millbank (1 mile north), Victoria (1 mile south-west), Pimlico (1 mile south), Vauxhall (1 mile south-east) and Lambeth (1 mile south-east). Other parts of the rest of London we cover include Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west), Connaught Village (2 miles north-west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles north-west) and Little Venice (3 miles north-west).
Around Westminster
We fit furniture in homes around Blewcoat School, St Matthew's School and Grafton Arms, among other places. The nearest railway station is London Victoria station, about 0.6 miles south-west. Nearby you’ll also find The Crime Museum (a few minutes’ walk south) and Kingly Court (0.9 miles north). Not far away are St. James's Park Lake.
What we do not do
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the seat
- Making the seat cushion, which is not our work
Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting works for window seats
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- It starts when you get in touch with some details about the window, including any radiator under it.
- We visit to measure the window and go through the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- You receive a written quote for the seat we have discussed, for you to look over.
- We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
