How we make fitted cupboards for Westminster

Our fitted cupboards are made for homes in Westminster and all over London. We begin with a design visit to measure and go through the design, and then send you a quote. The cupboards are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you’re living with using the full height of a room and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Westminster were built before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What affects the price in Westminster

The price for your room depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Westminster

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Westminster?

Yes, Westminster is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Westminster?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Flats, leases and landlords

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Fitted storage in Westminster

Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the streets around Westminster, with about 25% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 33 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Westminster. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Westminster joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For families living near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as London Underground Headquarters, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Clarence House, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Westminster is in the City of Westminster, about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster. Anywhere in Westminster, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

Every home in SW1P, W1J and SW1V is within our area for fitted cupboards, from the main roads to the quieter streets. We cover homes on streets like Eaton Lane, Wilton Road and Castle Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want fitted cupboards or another piece made for the room. Westminster sits close to the A4 and A202. Other places close to Westminster include Millbank (1 mile north), Victoria (1 mile south-west), Pimlico (1 mile south), Vauxhall (1 mile south-east) and Lambeth (1 mile south-east). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west), Connaught Village (2 miles north-west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles north-west) and Little Venice (3 miles north-west).

Local landmarks in Westminster

Around Westminster, we cover homes near Blewcoat School, St Matthew's School and Grafton Arms and the streets around them. For rail, the closest station is London Victoria station, roughly 0.6 miles south-west. A little further out are The Crime Museum (within half a mile south) and Kingly Court (0.9 miles north). Green spaces nearby include St. James's Park Lake.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many doors and carcasses, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It’s a good choice for utility rooms and cupboards on external walls.

Shelves

Adjustable shelves let you change the layout later if your needs change.
