Loft storage in Westminster: what you get

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in Westminster, it is planned around your things. If your home has needing storage in a loft office and a loft room that still feels unfinished, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Westminster, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall

When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Insulation pressed flat does not do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Questions from Westminster

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Westminster?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you use our contact form.

What affects the price in Westminster

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking near your home
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

What prompts loft storage in Westminster

The most common reason is wasted space. The low spaces at the edge of a loft room are hard to use. Cupboards and drawers built into the knee wall put it to work.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A loft room with too many jobs

For an older house near Christ Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Fitted storage in Westminster

About 47% of the homes in the area around Westminster went up before 1919, and about 25% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 412 entries within half a mile of the centre of Westminster. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, the rest of London included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Westminster. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near St James's Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Westminster is about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster, part of the City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Westminster on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. We cover places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Postcode districts we cover here for loft storage: SW1P, W1J and SW1V. Our area takes in homes on streets like Eaton Lane, Wilton Road and Castle Lane, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. The A4 and A202 runs close to Westminster; on busy main roads, unloading eaves cupboards takes a little planning. If you’re just outside Westminster, we also cover Millbank (1 mile north), Victoria (1 mile south-west), Pimlico (1 mile south), Vauxhall (1 mile south-east) and Lambeth (1 mile south-east). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west), Connaught Village (2 miles north-west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles north-west) and Little Venice (3 miles north-west).

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How fitting works for loft storage

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
