How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits painted cupboards. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Fitted cupboards in Kings Cross

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. If your home has landing shelves for bedding and towels and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Kings Cross, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat, then assembled in place. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Making use of tricky spaces in Kings Cross

In the streets around Kings Cross, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 252 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Kings Cross. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.

For an older house near Holy Cross Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live near Lewis Cubitt Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your children go to Argyle Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Kings Cross

Is Kings Cross in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Kings Cross is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kings Cross?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through during the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that is for your supplier or an electrician.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
