Bespoke kitchens in Barking

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If your home has a kitchen island with room around it and tall larder storage, that’s what kitchens are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A large number of homes around Barking date from 2000 onwards, and in newer homes the kitchen is typically part of an open-plan room. A bespoke kitchen can be planned to sit well in that space, with an island where there is room. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so wall cabinets are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Think about how you cook and what you store

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly around the sink and dishwasher. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Damp walls should be dealt with before cabinets are fitted. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on external walls.

Questions from Barking

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barking?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you’ve picked. It helps to choose them before the design is final, and the quote confirms what’s included.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What are your kitchens made from?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Barking

About 39% of the homes in the area around Barking went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Barking include Eastbury Manor House (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Church of St Patrick (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Barking (about 28%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

If you live in a period home close to St Patrick's Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a flat near Barking station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Barking

Some want a kitchen that suits a period house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and look as if they belong.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • A larder for food and small appliances

Close to Mayesbrook Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

How we price bespoke kitchens

What you pay depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it’s useful to sort them out ahead of time. Kitchens are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
