Common questions about fitted cupboards
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Camden Town?
Yes. Camden Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
What are your cupboards made from?
Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How much time does fitting need?
Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.
About our fitted cupboards in Camden Town
A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving.
Most homes around Camden Town are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Advice
Camden Town homes and fitted cupboards
Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around Camden Town, with about 22% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Camden Town, Historic England’s list includes All Saints Greek Orthodox Church (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St Michael (Grade II*), under half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 60% of households in the area around Camden Town live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a period home close to St Michael's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. Close to Lewis Cubitt Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. Living in a block of flats near Camden Road station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish. You choose the colour.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look that suits period homes. The colour is agreed with you.
Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
- Let us know how parking works on your street
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it’s worth doing before the design is agreed.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
