Loft storage in Camden Town

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in Camden Town, it’s planned around your things. People usually come to us about a loft room that still feels unfinished and wasted space behind the knee walls, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most households around Camden Town live in purpose-built flats, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Eaves cupboards are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors, then assembled in place. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

How we price loft storage

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so let us know about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth does the same job at the floor.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Camden Road station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Camden Town?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. We measure the way up not just the room. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Loft storage in Camden Town: local notes

In the streets around Camden Town, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 40%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Camden Town, Historic England’s list includes All Saints Greek Orthodox Church (Grade I), under half a mile south-east, and Church of St Michael (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Camden Town needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

If you live near Lewis Cubitt Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near St Michael's Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. Winfield House, about 1.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
