Fitted Cupboards in Waterloo

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Waterloo starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room

Shelves

Shelves are spaced to suit what goes on them, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many doors and carcasses, so it suits painted cupboards. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.

Fitted cupboards in Waterloo

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. Most enquiries start with cupboards that suit a period house and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Many homes around Waterloo were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Waterloo

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway

If you live in a flat close to London Waterloo station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Waterloo in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Waterloo is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lambeth and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Waterloo affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitted cupboards in Waterloo: local notes

About 43% of the homes in the streets around Waterloo went up since 2000, and about 18% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 162 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Waterloo. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Waterloo (about 43%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so the fixings for fitted cupboards are chosen for the board.

For a family home near Oasis Academy Johanna, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near Jubilee Gardens, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
