How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It is useful to tell us about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Fitted cupboards in Brixton

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors often slope. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage for towels and bedding and cupboards for a utility or boot room.

With a large share of homes around Brixton built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Making good walls after other work
  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Brixton

Do you cover homes near Brixton station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Brixton?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Brixton is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Brixton

Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Brixton, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Brixton is in the Rush Common and Brixton Hill Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 27% of households in the streets around Brixton live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Chapel of Corpus Christi, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Brixton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For families living near Sudbourne Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near Trinity Congregational Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and normally cost less, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.

Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They shape the design, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.
