Loft Storage in Dulwich

Thinking about loft storage in Dulwich? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

Loft storage in Dulwich

About our loft storage in Dulwich

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the carcasses and drawers their strength, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Dulwich. Typical reasons to get in touch are a loft room with too many jobs and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

With a large share of homes around Dulwich built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about loft storage

My home in Dulwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is Dulwich in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and Dulwich is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

How we price loft storage

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode

For a quote for loft storage in Dulwich, drop us a line using the contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It’s applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

How fitting works for loft storage

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Let us know about parking near your home

When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us.

Loft storage in Dulwich: local notes

In the streets around Dulwich, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 73%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Dulwich. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Dulwich joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a period home close to Christ's Chapel of God's Gift, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Bell House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Dulwich is about 1 mile north of East Dulwich, within the London Borough of Southwark. Whether your home in Dulwich is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We cover places right across Southwark, large and small.

In SE22, SE21 and SE23, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Court Lane, Druce Road and Boxall Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for loft storage. Main roads around Dulwich include the A2216. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to Dulwich include Dulwich Village (1 mile north-west), West Dulwich (1 mile south), Herne Hill (1 mile north-west), Sydenham Hill (1 mile south-east) and Forest Hill (1 mile east).
