Common questions about fitted cupboards
I live in a flat in East End of London. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?
Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.
How are fitted cupboards priced?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
How long does fitting take?
Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.
Fitted cupboards in East End of London
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. If your home has storage in a corner nothing else fits and storage for towels and bedding, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large number of homes around East End of London date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight.

What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.
- You tell us where the cupboards should go.
- We visit to measure up and discuss the design.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
- On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
- Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
How to get a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What it costs
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
What we need to know
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

For fitting in East End of London, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
