How we make fitted cupboards for Bromley

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are built-in storage that matches the woodwork and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat.

Many homes around Bromley were built since 2000, and newer houses that have had the loft converted often have sloping ceilings and eaves to use. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • A utility room with proper storage

If you live in a period home close to Bow Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Bromley

My home in Bromley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near West Ham station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in Bromley

Homes built since 2000 make up about 52% of the housing in the streets around Bromley, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 60 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bromley. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. More than half of the homes in the streets around Bromley (about 52%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are usually plasterboard on studs, so the fixings for fitted cupboards are chosen for the board.

For a family home near St Agnes RC Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Tide Mill (known As the House Mill), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What we don’t do

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Building work or structural changes
  • Moving gas or electricity meters

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
