Fitted cupboards in Donnybrook Quarter

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. If you’re living with a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and built-in storage that matches the woodwork, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Donnybrook Quarter were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Hackney Wick station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Donnybrook Quarter?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Is bespoke worth it?

Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, so the finish can match the room. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Fitted cupboards in Donnybrook Quarter: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 41% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Donnybrook Quarter, with about 22% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Donnybrook Quarter, 14 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. So a van fitting furniture in Donnybrook Quarter typically needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Sutton House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Lock Cottages, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Paul Old Ford, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Donnybrook Quarter is about 2 miles south-west of Whitechapel, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We design and make fitted cupboards for homes in Donnybrook Quarter and across Tower Hamlets, as part of our work in every London borough. Donnybrook Quarter is one of 31 places on our list for Tower Hamlets.

Every address in E3, E9 and E20 is covered for fitted cupboards. Other parts of Tower Hamlets we cover include Whitechapel (2 miles south-west), Spitalfields (2 miles south-west), Tower Hill (3 miles south-west), Shadwell (2 miles south), St George in the East (2 miles south-west) and Wapping (2 miles south-west).

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan fitted cupboards. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it’s worth doing before the design is agreed.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
