FAQs: fitted cupboards in Shadwell

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Shadwell?

Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Shadwell included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Does a conservation area in or near Shadwell affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we make fitted cupboards for Shadwell

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option for putting shoes on by the door. Typical reasons to get in touch are making use of an awkward alcove or corner and a linen cupboard on the landing; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most households around Shadwell live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage usually goes. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish that suits period homes. You choose the paint colour.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be flat, framed or panelled and finish them to match. Drawers below the doors suit shoes and small items.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Point out anything that needs access

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can typically be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

Fitted storage in Shadwell

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Shadwell, with about 28% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Shadwell, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. About 79% of households in the area around Shadwell live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a flat close to Wapping station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Do you need fitted cupboards in Shadwell?

Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats pile up on the newel post, shoes gather by the door and the vacuum lives in a corner. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and clears the floor.

Here’s what fitted cupboards can help with:

  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags

If your children go to Peter Hills with St Mary's and St Paul's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
