How we make fitted cupboards for Stepney
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a linen cupboard on the landing and tall cupboards where space is short.
Homes from the 1950s and 1960s typically have plain, regular rooms, which suits fitted storage with clean lines. Around Stepney, many homes were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. We still measure everything, as no room is perfectly square.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the measuring visit.
- We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
- We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and go through the layout. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we have agreed, for you to read through.
- The cupboards are made at our workshop.
- We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Fitted cupboards in Stepney: local notes
About 31% of the homes in the area around Stepney went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 30% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 112 entries within half a mile of the centre of Stepney. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Stepney (about 31%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Homes from that era tend to have little built-in storage, so fitted cupboards make a real difference, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.
Mansion House, about 1.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St John on Bethnal Green, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Stepney is about 1 mile west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Stepney included. In Tower Hamlets, Stepney is one of the places we cover.
We cover every part of E1 and E2 for fitted cupboards. We cover homes on streets such as Beaumont Square, Rectory Square and Carlton Square, whether you want fitted cupboards or another piece made for the room. The A11 and B120 runs close to Stepney, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. If you’re just outside Stepney, we also cover East End of London (1 mile south-west), Ratcliff (1 mile south), Bethnal Green (1 mile north-west), Whitechapel (1 mile west) and Limehouse (1 mile east). Across the rest of Tower Hamlets, our area takes in Old Ford (2 miles north-east), Poplar (2 miles south-east), London Docklands (2 miles south-east), Canary Wharf (2 miles south-east), Isle of Dogs (3 miles south-east) and Leamouth (3 miles east).

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood is a good fit. Span, depth and load all matter.
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.
The problems fitted cupboards solve
Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Uneven floors and walls that aren’t square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
- Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Tall cupboards where space is short
Close to Stepney Green Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Questions from Stepney
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Whitechapel station?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Stepney?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we have seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?
Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
