Fitted cupboards for your home in Soho

Fitted cupboards in Soho

We fit fitted cupboards in Soho and across London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, and then send you a quote. The cupboards are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you’re living with storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a cupboard for the meters with easy access, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Soho built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Soho homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Soho were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Soho include House of St Barnabas (Grade I), under half a mile north, and Church of St Giles in the Fields (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 49% of homes in the streets around Soho were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that age have lots of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight.

Close to St Anne's Churchyard? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.5 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For an older house near St Anne's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Soho is part of the City of Westminster, about 1 mile west of City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Soho on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. We cover places right across Westminster, large and small.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

  • Adjustable shelves

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan fitted cupboards. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you, so the space keeps working.

It’s useful to list what you want to store before we measure. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, so it helps to know this early.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Soho

I live in a flat in Soho. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Soho?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
